Buying a 32 Ton Diesel Forklift? 8 Key Considerations Before You Buy

Heavy-Duty Forklift Buying Guide

A practical buying guide for contractors, rental companies, steel yards, ports and industrial buyers choosing a 15–50 ton heavy-duty diesel forklift.

Buying a 32 ton diesel forklift is very different from purchasing a standard 3 or 5 ton warehouse truck. At this capacity, a small specification mistake can become an expensive problem: the forklift may technically lift 32 tonnes but fail to safely handle your actual load center, attachment, yard conditions or daily duty cycle.

This matters even more for small and mid-sized companies. A large fleet operator can absorb one poorly specified machine. An independent contractor, rental business or steel-processing company buying one heavy forklift usually cannot. Your first machine needs to generate revenue instead of creating downtime, unexpected transport costs or maintenance headaches.

The right question is therefore not simply “How much does a 32 ton forklift cost?” It is: “Which configuration gives me the lowest practical cost per working hour for my real load?”

Quick Buyer Rule: Never select a heavy-duty forklift by rated tonnage alone. Verify load weight, load center, attachment weight, fork length, lift height, ground conditions, turning space and expected working hours together.

1. Start With the Real Load — Not the “32 Ton” Sticker

A forklift’s rated capacity is only valid under defined conditions. One of the most overlooked variables is the load center: the horizontal distance between the fork face and the load’s center of gravity.

For example, the RUNTX CPCD320 heavy-duty diesel forklift is designed around a 32,000 kg rated capacity with a 1,200 mm load center. That makes it suitable for applications such as steel products, machinery components, stone, industrial molds and other concentrated heavy loads. But if your cargo is unusually long or its center of gravity moves farther forward, usable capacity can decrease.

This becomes even more important when attachments are installed. OSHA gives a simple real-world example in which a forklift rated at 5,000 lb with standard forks is rated at only 4,500 lb after a sideshifter is installed — a 10% reduction in that specific configuration. The lesson for heavy-duty buyers is clear: ask for the capacity curve of the final forklift-and-attachment combination, not just the base truck rating.

Before requesting a quotation, send the supplier:

  • Maximum load weight
  • Load dimensions
  • Estimated center of gravity
  • Required fork length
  • Required lift height
  • Any clamp, sideshifter, coil ram or special attachment

2. Compare 20, 25, 30, 32 and 40 Ton Models — Bigger Is Not Automatically Better

Many buyers intentionally oversize a forklift because they believe more capacity always means more safety. Some reserve capacity is sensible, but unnecessary oversizing increases purchase price, fuel consumption potential, shipping size, tire cost and maneuvering requirements.

Model ClassRated CapacityLoad CenterTypical Turning RadiusBest Fit
CPCD20020,000 kg1,100 mm4,500 mmMachinery, steel and port cargo
CPCD25025,000 kg1,200 mm6,200 mmHeavy fabrication and industrial yards
CPCD30030,000 kg1,200 mm6,600 mmLarge steel and project cargo
CPCD32032,000 kg1,200 mm6,900 mmHigh-capacity industrial handling
CPCD40040,000 kg1,200 mm7,200 mmExtreme heavy industry

If your operation normally handles 15–20 tonne loads, compare the RUNTX 20 Ton Heavy Duty Diesel Forklift before paying for unused 32-ton capacity. Buyers handling substantially heavier loads can also review the 50 Ton Heavy Duty Diesel Forklift and the broader 15–50+ ton platform.

3. Check Yard Space Before the Forklift Arrives

Heavy-duty forklifts require space. The CPCD320 has a turning radius of approximately 6.9 meters, compared with around 4.5 meters for the CPCD200. That difference matters inside steel yards, factory loading areas and rental sites where trucks, racks or stored materials restrict movement.

Measure gate width, working aisle width, loading zones, ramp gradients and turning areas before placing the order. A machine that can lift your load but cannot comfortably approach it will reduce productivity every shift.

4. Diesel Fuel Cost Should Be Evaluated Per Working Hour

Heavy forklifts are purchased for torque, durability and long duty cycles, but diesel use remains a major operating expense. One useful benchmark comes from U.S. Department of Energy material: a DOE project assumption used approximately 0.8 gallons of diesel per operating hour for forklift fuel consumption. Actual consumption for a 32-ton forklift will vary significantly with engine size, hydraulic demand, load, idle time and operating conditions, so this figure should not be treated as a CPCD320 consumption specification.

It does, however, demonstrate why idle management matters. DOE’s Alternative Fuels Data Center separately uses a benchmark of roughly 0.8 gallon per hour for heavy-duty diesel vehicle idling. Even reducing unnecessary idling by one hour per working day can represent roughly 208 gallons over 260 working days using that benchmark.

Small-Business TCO Tip: Ask the supplier for engine model, rated power, recommended service interval, filter list and typical spare-parts package before comparing quotations. A machine that is slightly cheaper to purchase can become more expensive if routine parts are difficult to obtain.

5. Look Beyond Engine Power: Chassis, Mast, Axles and Cooling Matter

Heavy forklift durability is largely determined by how the complete structure handles repeated load cycles. For steel mills, ports, mining support sites and precast concrete yards, look for a reinforced chassis, heavy-duty drive axle, correctly sized steering axle, robust mast channels, dependable hydraulic components and sufficient radiator capacity.

Cooling deserves particular attention in hot climates. A high-capacity forklift may spend long periods traveling slowly while simultaneously powering hydraulic functions. That creates heat even when road speed is low. Easy radiator access and a service-friendly engine compartment can reduce the time your mechanic spends on cleaning and routine inspection.

6. Safety Is a Purchasing Cost — Not an Optional Feature

Safety problems quickly become financial problems. OSHA reports that forklift overturns account for approximately 25% of forklift-related fatalities. The UK Health and Safety Executive likewise reports that vehicle overturns cause nearly one-fifth of deaths in workplace transport accidents.

For a 32-ton counterbalance forklift, buyers should therefore examine braking performance, operator visibility, restraint systems, mast visibility, lighting, alarms, tires and stability under the intended load. ISO 3691-1 provides internationally recognized safety requirements and verification principles for self-propelled industrial trucks, including diesel-powered counterbalanced forklifts.

Also confirm that the final data plate reflects any attachment fitted to the truck. An attachment can change the center of gravity and reduce residual capacity.

7. Buy the Configuration You Need — Not the Standard Factory Template

Heavy industrial applications vary too much for one configuration to suit every buyer. A steel distributor may need extra-long forks. A machinery contractor may need a different mast height. A rental company may prioritize standardized components and easy maintenance. A distributor may need customized paint, decals and regional engine compliance.

This is where sourcing directly from a manufacturer becomes valuable. RUNTX supports OEM/ODM configuration, including mast, fork, attachment, engine, tire, branding and other application-specific options. For smaller buyers, the advantage is that factory sourcing does not necessarily require a large fleet purchase.

RUNTX supports 1 Unit MOQ, allowing contractors, independent rental companies and industrial users to purchase a single heavy-duty forklift at factory-direct pricing before considering a larger fleet order. Small-batch wholesale pricing is also available for dealers and rental companies expanding gradually.

8. Calculate the Landed Cost, Not Just the FOB Machine Price

A 30–50 ton forklift is physically large, so international freight can materially affect the final investment. Before comparing two suppliers, confirm what is included in the quotation: machine configuration, forks, attachment, export packing, inland transport, port charges and shipping terms.

For first-time importers and small businesses, logistics support can be almost as important as the machine itself. RUNTX has experience supporting international equipment shipments and can assist buyers with export documentation, shipping arrangements and the information required for destination-side customs clearance.

A transparent landed-cost discussion early in the purchasing process prevents the common situation where a low equipment quotation becomes expensive after freight and optional equipment are added.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much can a 32 ton diesel forklift actually lift?

A nominal 32-ton forklift may be rated for 32,000 kg only at a specified load center and configuration. Longer loads, higher lift heights and attachments can reduce residual capacity. Always request the load-capacity chart for your final configuration.

What industries typically use 30–32 ton forklifts?

Common applications include steel processing, heavy machinery manufacturing, ports, mining support, precast concrete, stone processing, project cargo and other industries handling concentrated loads that exceed standard forklift capacities.

Should I buy a 32 ton forklift if my maximum load is only 20 tons?

Not automatically. Some safety margin is useful, but unnecessary oversizing increases machine dimensions and acquisition cost. A properly configured 20–25 ton forklift may provide a better return if its residual capacity safely covers your real load.

Can I order only one heavy-duty forklift directly from China?

Yes. RUNTX supports single-unit purchasing for qualified heavy-duty forklift configurations, making factory-direct sourcing practical for contractors, factories, rental businesses and other buyers who do not need a full container or fleet order.

Can RUNTX customize the forklift for my market?

OEM/ODM options can include engine configuration, forks, mast height, tires, attachments, paint and branding. Final configurations should be confirmed according to the application and destination-market requirements.

Final Buying Advice

The best heavy-duty diesel forklift is not necessarily the machine with the highest capacity or the lowest quotation. For most small and mid-sized buyers, the better investment is the forklift that safely handles the real load, fits the yard, uses serviceable components and arrives with the correct attachment from day one.

Before purchasing a 32 ton diesel forklift, verify load center, residual capacity, turning radius, mast and fork configuration, engine and cooling system, maintenance access, safety requirements and landed cost. Doing this before production is far cheaper than correcting the specification after delivery.
